I’m sure most of you have heard of Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity (equivalence of mass and energy/mass and velocity) E=mc2, it is well known, at least as a saying, even if not truly understood. To briefly summarize the theory it means that mass and energy are relative to each other. But in reality Einstein’s theory of the laws of the physical universe are applicable to the very core of what life is all about, because life is about relationships, and people like mass and energy are relative to each other and God.
According to Mr. Webster the word “relative” means: 1. a thing having a relation to or connection with or necessary dependence upon another thing; 2. not absolute or independent. And the word “relativity” means: 1. the quality or state of being relative: esp.: dependence on something else. According to God’s Theory of Relativity we are we are not independent (as much as we strive to be), but actually dependent beings. You no doubt have heard the expression “no man is an island”, which attests to the fact that no one can do it alone. We need each other and we need God. And actually it’s not really God’s theory it is, in reality, a fact of life. Humans were created for relationships.
No individual is complete in himself or herself. No one! No individual can reach his or her total potential or realize their true fulfillment in life on their own. We are all interdependent. We must have help to become what we were designed to be both collectively as a people and individually as a person. We are interdependent on relationships with others. And while we are dependent on the horizontal relationships, person to person, to help define and mature us, it is the vertical relationship with Christ that propels us to a higher level. This is the key relationship that will define us not only for time but for eternity!
The Apostle John wrote in First John chapter 1 and verses 3 and 4, “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.” The actual fact is this is the whole reason for the Bible and the redemption and salvation of mankind, to have fellowship with the Father and his Son, Jesus! Not only now but forever and in so doing to make your joy complete! Forever! So, how are your relationships? How are they with others? And how’s your vertical relationship with Jesus? It’s like the American Express card… You can’t leave earth without it!
