Have you ever wondered why for His very first miracle Jesus turned water into wine? Think about it? If it were you or I making our miracle debut what would you do? For me I think I would do something really dramatic like pull fire down out of the sky or perhaps, if I were in a more compassionate mood, I would heal all the lepers first, or walk on water at one of John the Baptizer’s baptism ceremonies where everyone could see me! But change the water into wine?
Yet, that is exactly what Jesus chose to do. While a guest at a wedding he, the one who put the stars in their place, chose to change plain water into wine. Now, you may be thinking (those of you who know the story in John chapter 2:1 - 11), that he did it because his mother asked him to. And, while that is true and Jesus had never, that’s right never disobeyed his mother, he didn’t do it just because Mom asked him to. No, he was God as well as man and although he gently rebuked her when he said, “My time has not yet come”, he went ahead and helped out the bridegroom’s family by making more wine. He didn’t do it just to obey his mother, after all being God he knew exactly what would be asked of him at the wedding even before he got there, and he could have simply not gone if he didn’t want to change the water into wine.
I believe he did it for several reasons. A wedding was the perfect time and place to launch his public Messiah ministry. It was a joyous special event and usually a memorable event. A very relational event; an event that depicted God’s relationship with us and it was a well publicized event. Although he had done nothing publicly yet he had already been outed by John four days earlier as, “The one” who was coming, in other words as “Messiah”, and he already had a small following of disciples; in fact some were with him at the wedding. Performing this miracle now would only strengthen his disciple’s faith in him. It also shows that God cares about our cares in that he was meeting the needs of the host by supplying the needed wine. But it goes beyond this.
It is representative of the earthly becoming better, becoming heavenly! It speaks about plain water becoming not just wine but the “best wine”! Because that’s what Jesus did. He didn’t just make wine he made the best wine! And that speaks of his ability to take you and I and turn us from plain sinful man into adopted children of the King! To take water from stone ceremonial wash jars and make it fit for the Master’s use, for the Master’s consumption! So, let me ask you? What are you today, right now, are you plain water in a wash jar or are you the best of wine? Have you yielded your life to Christ Jesus or are you resisting his call to be fine wine? Have you allowed Jesus to transform you from an earthly person to one fit for the King in Heaven? And if you’ve trusted Christ as your Savior have you allowed him to make you into the “best wine” or are you satisfied to be bottom shelf? It’s up to you, you know! Will you let him have his way? Just one more question. Why not?
