At Horeb God told Moses that he was to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?" (Exodus 3:11)
At Ophrah God told Gideon that he was to save the children of Israel from the Midianites. But Gideon said to God, "O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest of Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house." (Judges 6:15)
At Tekoa God told Amos that he was to go prophesy to the children of Israel. Israel questioned Amos' message and credentials. But Amos said to them, "I was no prophet, nor was I a son of a prophet, but I was a sheep breeder and a tender of sycamore fruit. Then the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said to me, Go..." (Amos 7:15-15)
At Anathoth God told Jeremiah that he was to be a prophet to the nations. But Jeremiah said to God, "Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth." (Jeremiah 1:6)
At Damascus God told Ananias that he was to go to Saul of Tarsus and lay hands on Saul to restore his sight. But Ananias said to God, "Lord, I have heard of this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem." (Acts 9:13)
At Ephesus God told Timothy through the Apostle Paul that he was to always be ready to boldly preach the word of God. But Timothy's shy and timid nature struggled with that command. (II Timothy 1:6-7)
All these men received God's call with reluctance. Can we blame them? They had their lives interrupted; their temperaments challenged, and were given tasks too big for them to successfully handle.Yet, as each one cooperated with God and yielded up their hearts to His will they witnessed awesome things. Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt. Gideon saved the children of Israel from the Midianites. Amos obediently spoke God's word to the children of Israel. Jeremiah powerfully did the same. Ananias launched the ministry of the great Apostle Paul. And Timothy took up Paul's mantle of preaching and teaching.
Ask any one of these men when they truly knew what it meant to be alive; when they really experienced the abundant life, and you can be sure they would say it was only found in being who God created them to be and then doing what God created them to do.
