When our son was a little fella, I would buckle him into his car seat and off we'd go for a ride in the country. He liked to look at the animals on the surrounding farms. Approaching familiar crossroads a voice would come from the back seat, "Go that way, Daddy, go that way!" A glance in the rear view mirror revealed his face aglow with pleasure and an arm pointing to the desired direction. I always went his way. After all, he was the reason for the journey and my love for him made his way, my way.
The Lord God told the children of Israel that they had gone in the wrong direction. They had lost their purpose for the journey - loving Him. The Lord instructed them to turn from their wanderings and walk into His arms of grace and mercy. They would then see His perfect way and "Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way, walk in it.' Whenever you turn to the right hand or you turn to the left." (Isaiah 30:21) The promised result was that His people would find themselves throwing away all the junk and stuff in their lives saying to them, "Get away!" (v. 22) and He would rain down His life and His blessings upon them.
Like Israel our problem is "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." (Proverbs 14:12) Just think if I always chose my way at those crossroads years ago how disappointed my little boy would have been when I turned a deaf ear to his exuberant "Go that way, Daddy, go that way!" Yet we arrive at so many daily crossroads and how often and how easily we ignore the voice of the most precious One behind us saying, "This is the way, walk in it!"
We always need to go His way. After all, He is the reason for the journey and our love for Him makes His way, our way.
