When I was a little fella I wanted to be a big fella. So I would get my dad to measure me. I’d stand as tall as possible in the doorway between our breakfast nook and playroom as dad marked the paneling. I’d ask, “Am I growing, Dad?”
There wasn’t a whole lot I could do to make myself grow taller. A decent diet and lots of milk didn’t hurt, but it was pretty much up to my gene pool and DNA. This is not so with growing spiritually. The Bible tells us we have “been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever.” (I Pet 1:23) Peter then continues with this instruction: “As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” (2:2-3)
Then the writer of Hebrews exhorts us to move beyond just milk and add solid food to our spiritual diets so we continue to grow in the things of God. (Heb 5:12-14)
Scripture teaches us we are to grow in grace, knowledge, faith, maturity, unity, truth and “to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” (Eph 4:13) We grow by engaging with our Father through His inspired word.
I’m not concerned about my height anymore. Now my great desire is to grow in the stature of the fullness of Christ. How about you? Are you like me and often ask, “Am I growing, Father?”
