I just came back from a morning walk. I enjoy walking. I am thankful that my legs still work so I can participate in this activity. It’s good exercise and it gives me time to think and pray. I am looking forward to fall when the leaves begin to change and there is a little chill in the air. Walking is also neat in another way. You can actually walk with someone else while conversing. People that are walking together have developed some sort of relationship. It may be long time friends. It may be spouses married a short time or a long time. It maybe two people who have recently met. Nonetheless there is some degree of relationship.

And that brings me to Enoch. The Scripture says, “And Enoch walked with God…” Gen 5:24 Wow! How would you like to have that experience? Actually you can. According to the Book of Hebrews, Enoch pleased God because he walked with Him by faith. (Heb 11:5,6) Secondly, Enoch diligently sought after God. (Heb 11:6) For “He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Heb 11:6 Enoch’s name means dedicated. He was dedicated to God – to serve Him – to live for Him- to worship Him and Him alone.

The New Testament gives a clear picture of what it means to walk with God. To the Corinthians the apostle Paul wrote, “For we walk by faith not by sight. (5:7) When we do this we please God just like Enoch did. We receive Jesus our Savior and Lord by faith and then we are to walk by faith in obedience to the word of God. We are also to walk according to the Spirit. (Gal 5:16) Unless we learn to walk according to the Spirit we will not be walking by faith for the Spirit empowers us to live by faith. We also are to walk in the light and thus will have fellowship with Him. (I John 1:5-7)

There are cautions against walking in the wrong way. We are not to walk according to the flesh. (Rom 8:4) The Bible instructs believers not to walk according to man. (I Cor 3:3) We are not to walk according to sight. (II Cor 5:7) We are not to walk disorderly (II Thes 3:6) or to walk in the futility of our mind. (Eph 4:17) And we are not to walk in darkness, “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” I John 1:6 Walking is plainly a picture of the relationship that we can have with Almighty God.

In order to walk with God you must first have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus Christ. If you have received personally Jesus as your Lord and Savior, then you can walk with God as Enoch did. How have your walks been lately? On your walks are you allowing Him to direct your paths or are you out in front choosing the level ground rather than the hills and valleys? Or have you lost sight of Him because you are lagging behind? Hopefully you have developed the attitude of Jeremiah …“O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not man who walks to direct his own steps.” (10:23) How will you walk with Him today?
