University speech and hearing scientist Robert Miller believes that one of the most complex everyday activities is talking. During any given conversation there are about 100 muscles working in conjunction with about 100 nerve endings which transmit impulses to muscle fibers. In addition to this he states that we make about 14 sounds per second when speaking. And this does not even take into account the additional brain activities necessary to develop and select words to express thought, and sequence the words. No wonder it takes an infant several months before he or she can begin to talk.

This is just one of the many functions that the body learns to do. Balancing and walking also requires some significant combinations of muscular skills and balance. And what about the seeing eye and the hearing ear? As humans we have learned much about the complexity of the human body even to the point that there are specialist physicians out there for almost every body part. Yet without the ability to express thoughts verbally or into writing most of this information would not have been able to be transferred from one person to the next.

Interestingly the Greek word for ‘word’ is logos. It means the expression of a thought not the mere name of an object. (Vine’s expository dictionary) The apostle John used ‘Logos’ in referring to Jesus. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…”(John 1:14) Jesus the Messiah in life and in speech revealed the Father to us. He said to Philip, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9)   He is “the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power…” (Heb 1:3)

In creation God spoke and things existed. “By the word of God the heavens were made.” (Psalm 33:6)  And it was through the Word that all things were made. (John1:2) Jesus Christ created us and gave us the ability to speak words as well. For this reason we can speak words back to Him that express the intent and delight of our heart. May we use this miraculous gift of speech to express to the Word as the Psalmist did, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)
