Back in October of 2009 peace activists from Greenpeace demonstrated on Mt. Megiddo in Israel. Their message was to warn the world that it must disarm, especially the nuclear capabilities that are possessed by several nations. Their declaration was displayed on a large banner, “Disarmament or Armageddon.”

They staged the demonstration there because this is the future sight according to the Bible of the campaign of Armageddon. Armageddon literally means, ‘Mount Megiddo’. The Scripture teaches that Satan, the antichrist, and false prophet “gather the kings of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon.” (Rev 16:14, 16)

Desiring to have a world void of weaponry is noble. Who does not want to live in peace and security? The truth is that man will never bring such peace to the earth. God’s Word has foretold us of the coming future event. It is unavoidable.

Renald Showers in his book, The Most High God, wrote, “Ironically, the more man tries to establish Utopia through self-rule the more his situation worsens. Instead of ruling the world in an orderly, meaningful way, he brings disorder, instability and chaos. Man pollutes his environment. His world is shaken by wars and threats of war. His streets are filled with violence and crime. His economy is uncontrollable. He is gripped with the fear of total annihilation by his own doomsday weapons. …Man desperately needs to change his course by recognizing the root of his predicament – his rejection of the rule of God in the favor of self – rule. If there were ever a time when man needed to be confronted with the sovereign rule of God and the serious consequences of rejecting that rule, the time is now.”

Man as a whole will not realize the consequences of rejecting the rule of God. But individuals can. Every person is accountable to God for his own beliefs and actions. According to the prophet Ezekiel, “The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.” (18:20) Thus, according to the Apostle Paul, “But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.” (Rom 4:5) Therefore, having been justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ…(Rom 5:1)

The message is not ‘disarmament or Armageddon’. The roadway to true peace is only through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. “He Himself is our peace”… (Eph 2:14) Which path are you on – the highway to heaven or the road to Armageddon?
