“Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there…And they said, “Come let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:1-2,4)

At the time of Noah mankind had become so wicked on the earth the Bible says God was sorry He had made man. Therefore, the flood was in a sense, a big old Saturday night bath for the world. Saving Noah and his family gave man a new day and another chance to trust and obey God and go forth and “be fruitful and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply in it.” (Genesis 9:7) And of course, what did man do? They found the plain of Shinar and agreed it would be a great place to build a big old dream house. Human pride fed the refusal of the people to disperse and spread out upon the earth with the oracles of God and godly offspring. Notice also that the people wanted to make a name for themselves. Were they not to be named the people of the most high God? Once again we witness a manifestation of mankind’s continual rebellion against their Creator.

The Tower of Babel was actually mankind’s first attempt at globalism: One government (let us build ourselves a city), one religion (let us make a name for ourselves), and a complete alliance and reliance built on the foundation of fallible and sinful man rather than on the perfect and righteous Rock of Ages. The Lord put a quick stop to it knowing a people united to do their will and not His would consume the world with evil just as in the pre-flood days.

After many centuries a “second coming” of one worldism is on the fast track. Biblical prophecy assures those on whom the last days will come that this will be so. In our day the ground work in seemingly every composition of life is being laid for the building of the city and the tower. One crisis after another places one more brick in man’s yellow brick road. In his article “Galloping Globalism” for Bible Prophecy Today, Terry James explores these crisis’ and the world’s response to them concluding with these thoughts: [“Globalism seems to be the answer, they obviously have concluded. But, their actions remind of the prophecy we’ve looked at more than once: “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure” (Psalm. 2:1-5). The powers that be amongst the nations have long since cast God aside, thinking to bring the world back to Babel and the one world Nimrod and the boys determined to build. Globalism didn’t work then. God guarantees in His prophetic Word that it won’t work this time.”]
